The Victorian Government is seeking suitably skilled Aboriginal Victorian to contribute their experience and knowledge to improving the environmental health of rivers, wetlands and floodplains by registering an expression of interest for the role of Commissioner with the Victorian Environmental Water Holder (VEWH). Only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can apply.

The recently launched Water for Victoria, outlines the Victorian Government’s strategic plan to manage the state’s water resources now and into the future.  This includes partnering with Victoria’s Traditional Owners to include Aboriginal values and knowledge in water resources planning and participate on the boards of the State’s water sector.

The VEWH is an independent statutory authority responsible for holding and managing Victoria’s environmental water entitlements (the Water Holdings).  The responsibilities of the VEWH include:

  • making decisions on the most effective use of the Water Holdings, including use, trade and carryover
  • liaising with other water holders to ensure coordinated use of all sources of environmental water
  • authorising waterway managers to implement watering decisions
  • commissioning targeted projects to demonstrate ecological outcomes of environmental watering at key sites
  • publicly communicating environmental watering decisions and outcomes.

Under Commission direction, the VEWH will continue to build strong partnerships with partner governments, waterway managers and the community to ensure efficient and effective delivery of environmental water.  Decision-making will be independent and transparent and draw heavily on the local planning done by waterway managers.

Applicants must be a Victorian resident with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage and have knowledge of or experience in one or more of the following:

  • environmental management
  • sustainable water management
  • economics
  • public administration.
