Appointments to the Magistrates' Court of Victoria

The Attorney-General seeks expressions of interest for appointment as a magistrate of the Magistrates' Court of Victoria.

Magistrates are appointed by the Governor in Council, on the advice of the Attorney-General.

Magistrates are able to apply their broad legal expertise in a complex range of cases including civil, criminal and family violence. Currently, the Magistrates' Court of Victoria is undergoing a significant program of reform and modernisation including in relation to bail and family violence, capital building works and enhancements and technology improvements. 

Candidates will be able to contribute towards the courts program of modernisation by demonstrating a high level of integrity, sound judgement, interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to conduct hearings. In addition, Magistrates will be able to apply their significant experience in court craft as well as showcase their skills in dispute resolutions, management, leadership and emerging problem-solving approaches in a modern court of summary jurisdiction.

Magistrates are supported in developing their court craft with a comprehensive professional development program ensuring Magistrates' receive the latest information and support, opportunities to engage with peers, a judicial well-being program and an on-going commitment to providing additional support throughout a Magistrates' career.

Qualifications and conditions of employment are set out in sections 7 and 10 of the Magistrates' Court Act 1989. The remuneration of magistrates is set in accordance with the Judicial Entitlements Act 2015 and is available at

Magistrates will ordinarily be required to sit in regional Victoria for a period of up to three years and may also be required to travel to regional areas.
